Disclaimer here: I'm no chemist. These came from trial and error as I used recipes found in books, and tweaked them over the years to something I liked. So far, my favorite book for cleaner recipes is Green Up your Clean Up by Jill Potvin Schoff. Why? Because of page 37, that's why. She explains the cleaning effects of acids (vinegar & lemon juice) versus alkylines (borax and baking soda) and for what sort of householdy things each is appropriate. By explaining why which is for what, she empowers the readers to put what they want into their little spray bottles, effectively creating their own 'recipes.' So yeah, page 37 alone is worth the price of the entire book, the rest of which is pretty nifty too.
Carpet Deoderizer
- 1.5 cups baking soda
- 0.5 cups cornstarch
- 12+ drops of your favorite scent of essential oil
- Sift these together to avoid clumps and to thoroughly mix the oil. Store in a shaker bottle; I use one of those Rubbermaid condiment bottles for this.
Window Cleaner
- 2 cups peppermint tea
- 1.5 cups white vinegar
- 0.25 cups isoprpyl alcohol
- .025 cups lemon juice
- 12+ drops of grapefruit seed extract (to preserve the lemon juice)
- 0.5 teaspoon liquid castille soap (I use Dr. Bronner's brand)
- 12+ drops of your favorite scent of essential oil
- store in a spray bottle
Disinfectant Spray
- 4 cups of water
- 0.25 teaspoon (about 25 drops) tea tree essential oil
- 0.25 teaspoon (about 25 drops) lavender essential oil
- 12+ drops eucalyptus essential oil
- store in a spray bottle
Kitchen Cleaner
- 3.5 cups peppermint tea
- 0.25 cups white vinegar
- 2 teaspoons liquid castille soap
- 2 teaspoons borax
- 0.5 cups lemon juice
- 12+ drops grapefruit seed extract
- 8+ drops of your favorite scented essential oil
- store in a spray bottle
Bathroom Cleaner
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups white vinegar
- 0.25 cup liquid castille soap
- 2 teaspoon borax
- 1 tablespoon tea tree essential oil
- 5+ drops of your favorite scented essential oil
- store in a spray bottle
